I offer workshops in platinum/palladium printing, gum-platinum printing and
wet plate collodion photography a few times a year as time permits. I am
pleased to be affiliated with the Ansel Adams Workshops in Yosemite
National Park since 2000. In 2008 I will also be teaching with the Photographer's
Formulary in Montana and Project Basho in Philadelphia. I will be
returning to Scotland in the summer of 2008 to teach wet plate collodion
and gum-platinum printing. More details about these workshops is available
here. I also offer group introductory workshops and one-on-one workshops in my
home studio tailored to meet the needs of individual students. If you are
interested in attending a workshop in the future, please
e-mail me so I can add you to my mailing list.

An Introduction to Platinum/Palladium Printing
|
|
Platinum/palladium prints are valued by photographers, collectors, galleries
and museums for their inherent beauty and archival stability. Although there
is much lore and mystique associated with the platinum printing process,
when properly handled, it can be accomplished by anyone willing to put in
a little time and effort to make it work. Platinum printing is often thought
to be a very difficult and expensive process. In this workshop we will
de-mystify the process and learn the basic skills necessary to produce
very fine platinum/palladium prints at a reasonable cost.

Topics to be covered in this intensive workshop will include (2-day itinerary): |

The Plan
The Placerville workshops consist of a minumum of three and a maximum of
five people so that each student
will have adequate one-on-one instruction. Previous darkroom experience
is helpful, although not required. Medium format or larger negatives (4x5
is the best size to learn with) are recommended. I will provide
appropriate negatives to print with if you don't have your own.
|
|
The workshop will begin Saturday morning by looking at many platinum prints
as well as examples of each participant's work. Bring prints to share
with the class! If you don't already have large format negatives,
bring smaller negatives to scan or previously scanned images on disc (preferred
to save time). An overview of current methods for making desktop digital
negatives will be presented, then you will be able to make a few negatives to
use for the wworkshop. We will spend some time reviewing the technical
aspects of the process and by Saturday afternoon we will be printing. Sunday
from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. will be devoted to making prints (and possibly
additional negatives) and will include discussions and demonstrations on
retouching, tea toning, print presentation,
politics and maybe a few good jokes to keep us going. You will also learn
how to deal with any problems encountered along the way. A class work-book
is included with all the technical details of the process. Bring your negatives,
your enthusiasm and your sense of humor. These intensive workshops are fun
and you will go home with a stack of prints and the skills to make more.
